WANDERERS’ winning run might have come to an unsatisfactory end at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night – but Steven Schumacher is warning against overreaction.

Fifth-placed Stockport County come to the Toughsheet Stadium this weekend in a game which could have huge significance in the League One play-off race.

Bolton will be out to avenge a 5-0 humbling at Edgeley Park earlier in the season and can climb above County if they can return to winning ways.

A big crowd is expected for a high-pressure contest on Saturday lunchtime but Schumacher is adamant that his side’s midweek defeat will not have an adverse effect in what he felt was always going to be a key game in the run-in.

“The Stockport game was always going to be huge for both clubs regardless of what result we got (at Bristol),” said the Bolton boss.

“There’s no big drama. We are not going to get carried away. The performance as a whole was very good, especially given the run we have been on. We have played loads of games recently so to play with that sort of energy and quality was quite pleasing.

“It’s obviously a missed opportunity to go above them (Stockport) in the table and get some more momentum. But I am not going to get too down on it, I’m not going to get disappointed, I’m going to prepare for another big game and remind the players of how well we have been playing.

“There are things we have to improve on and learn from, and we will, and to lose it the way we did at the end wasn’t great. But we have to prepare now for a huge game and make sure we are ready for it.”

Wanderers face a quick turnaround for what will be their fifth game of the month and the final one before the international break. Stockport, who also travel to Wrexham on March 22, will be playing their fourth.

Schumacher reckons his players did not show any major signs of fatigue at Bristol Rovers and believes they have already proved their resilience during his short stay with the club.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that they will be ready for Stockport because they have been fantastic since we have been in here.

“Every time there has been some adversity in games they have managed to respond. So, I've got no doubt that they'll try and put it right at the weekend.

“I'd say that it wasn't an awful performance (at Bristol Rovers). It definitely wasn't. So, I'm not going to be overly critical.

“A draw probably would have been a fair result with the way that the second half panned out.

“We've just got to do better in the big moments. We've got to score when we have them big chances. And we've got to be a bit more streetwise, probably in the second half, not to give up the opportunities that we did.”

Meanwhile, Josh Sheehan has been called up to the Wales squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and North Macedonia.

The midfielder has 10 caps for his country and will be looking to get off to a good start in a group which also includes Belgium and Liechtenstein.
